For members of China’s upper class, Tibetan mastiffs are rapidly becoming a status symbol, due in large part to the fact that these pretty puppies are considered to be a “pure Chinese” dog breed.
Enter Hong Dong (Big Splash, in English), the 11-month-old, 180 pound Tibetan mastiff who was recently purchased by one of the China’s wealthy coal industrialists for 10 million yuan (roughly $1.6 million), making him the “world’s most expensive dog.”
“He is a perfect specimen,” said Lu Liang, Hong Dong’s breeder. “He has excellent genes and will be a good breeding dog. When I started in this business, 10 years ago, I never thought we would see such a price.”
Before Hong Dong, the title was held by a Tibetan mastiff named Yangtze River Number Two, who sold in 2009 for 4 million yuan.
