I’d like to hear the story behind this.

I am a little bit concerned the safety of the dog. If natural instinct kicks in, the result could be disaster.

I thought that too, which makes you and me both “care trolls” according to some people.

I read the article someone linked, and it said that the cheetah was 10 months old, so I would definitely worry as she matures. It also said the trainer/owner was 23, which makes me wonder how much experience he has with this kind of cross-species situations and their long-term outcomes.

Something that makes me doubt all the numbers in the article, though, is that it also says the golden weighs 18 pounds! And that’s not a typo, since it says the cheetah now weighs 40, and notes that’s more than twice the dog’s weight. There is not way that golden retriever weighs 18 pounds, so now I wonder about the whole article.

Cincinnati zoo does this too. They raise the cheetahs and dogs together from 6 weeks old, and they are companions from life. Cheetahs have non-retractable claws, but they are extremely non-confrontational, and very mild. Check out the Cincinnati zoo’s cheetah blog – it is amazing.

West Coast Animal Park near Bend, OR. used to do this with Bengals and St. Bernards back in the 70′s. I have a great snap of a baby Bengal sitting on my lap sucking on my thumb while mom and her constant companion, the St. look on. If I can dig it out, I’ll post it.

this is not a Cheetah. This is a freakin’ leopard. Quite possibly the most deadly predator on earth. Poor doggie…
