Actually, eating grass is a sign of lack of chlorophyll. Dogs throw grass up b/c they can’t digest it. If your dog eats grass, you should get alfalfa sprouts or spinach and blend it with some water then pour it on their food.

It looks like a compulsive behavior brought on by boredom- lots of border collies and border mixes have obsessions similar to this- I know of one who has to run in a circle licking the floor when he sees a fly on the ceiling. They need a job as a distraction, like the herding they were bred for- try some obsessive frisbee or ball playing- quite a bit healthier!

Licking floors and eating grass is a sign of the dog not feeling well, usually a stomach ache, and grass usually makes them throw up.

It’s the salty taste though. It’s why dogs lick your hands and feet at the end of the day. Sweat has a salty taste.

When a pet licks a person repeatedly, it could mean the PERSON has an ailment.
Often dogs can sniff out certain kinds of cancer, impending seizures, or other illnesses.
I also thought of the dog’s wall-licking possibly due to lack of calcium -specially if it’s a plastered wall.

I would bet that the paint on that wall contains lead. Lead was, among other things, used as a sweetener for wine by the Romans. This is also I believe why paint chips are such a danger for children (who would eat paint chips?) who would only know they were flakes of something sweet. The dog probably isn’t being terribly harmed by the amount of exposure in the video, but the owner would probably want to prevent the behavior.

Yes, this particular LOL is NOT an lol, but I gots no probs with occasional such ones if they educate. Hey, all of us here like animals or we wouldn’t be here, yes? That dog compulsively licking the wall may have behavior probs, but there is a more immediate danger as evidenced by so many posts. Many of the chemicals on our walls, furniture and carpets are toxic to animals if ingested. Probably not necessary to run in circles and scream that the sky is falling, but it’s not a bad thing to be aware and mindful of such things.

This is anxious behavior and in addition to the vet check, owners should use stuffed kongs and puzzle feeders like tricky treat ball, tug-a-jug, etc. Stop all bowl feeding.

I don’t think it is fair to be judging this owner for finding the behaviour odd. I am sure that your dog does things you find funny that others find irresponsible as a pet owner.

Rosieluv is right..just last night my wife noticed one of ours compulsively licking the sofa…we took him outside and he started mowing through grass…after about 5 minutes he was ok and back to his normal bouncy self.

Maybe she GOT ill by licking on all that stuff. There’s lots of poison in colorants and fibers. Here in Germany we have lots of tests concerning poison in toys. And – sad but true – in many cases they find cancer-causing stuff, especially in products which come from China.

I know some dogs will lick the walls in particular because there’s something about the taste of the plaster. My dog is an example of this.

rosieluv – what if this is the first time the dog has done this? Could there be a coolness to the wall that is irresistable? A flavor of some sort on the wall? Maybe the dog never did this again?
But it is true that many (of what we see as) funny animal moments are actually cries for help! Sad, but true.

Compulsive licking of walls, floors, rugs etc. is an indicator of stress. Poor li’l doggie needs more exercise and attention! Not a lol, really, is it?
