i believe that there is nothing to be said about this picture but respect.
all of you losers out there who sit there and complain about the war in iraq and how the soliders are nothing but people. SHAME ON YOU! THEY ARE THE REASON YOU ARE STILL ALIVE TODAY AND HAVE THE FREEDOM TO DO WHAT YOU WANT!! being in the army and out in the middle-east fighting for your country i think is the hardest thing in he world. everyday soliders are wondering if they will ever see there loved ones again. i know 5 people who were out in iraq for 6 months and they said “its scary to know if your putting your foot in the right place, because if its the wrong place.. your gone.” and this dog in the picture i have respect for too.

so again. all of you inconsiderate low life losers out there can be quiet. and think for a minute of what your saying.

and i hope this dog and the soliders behind him are safe.

This is nothing to do with patriotism. Its to do with a thought for those who, once again are defending your right to talk in this way. With little regard or love for anything else but yourselves. Isn’t it nice to think that the world is not full of people like you or we would not have this great Cheezburger site to begin with.
Last time I put in anything nice for the dogs.
It seems to bring the trouble makers from out under their rocks.

What strikes me as odd is the implied notion that without soldiers, we (well, Americans) wouldn’t have freedom of speech.

I’m not saying that’s not true, but everyone seems to take that point for granted.

That’s just like saying it’s not fair to send a Dachsie sown a hole to kill a badger, or to make Border Collies herd day in and day out or to make hounds track over long distances. These are the tasks we’ve assigned these animals. They may not get a say in it, but I guarantee you, the dogs who do this sort of work love it. If they didn’t, then they wouldn’t have been put into the program in the first place.

I also agree with desdemona. It is a dificult topic. both sides have resonable arguments. though it really is not fair to send dogs out to save us. They do not have a choice.

I understand what ur saying Remo. I am a christian but I wouldn’t ever deride you for what ever you choose to believe in are not as is this case.
it matters not but was does matter is the thanks we can give to those who defend our right to believe or not to believe, to say what we want even if it isn’t what you would agree with.
In what ever way you choose show them you care.

I’m going to have to disagree with you on this one. Saying that dogs shouldn’t be conscripted goes against the very nature of Canis familiaris. The domesticated dog has been bred for thousands of years to not only be our companion, but also to work for us. A dog without a job to do, whether it’s something as simple fetching or as complex as being a War Dog, very quickly becomes unstable.

If you’ve ever met what a friend of mine refers to as ‘Armpit Piranhas’ (most often a Chihuahua or a Pomeranian), then you’ll known what I’m talking about. These are dogs that have had their ‘jobs’ taken away from them, and look what they’ve become.

Anytime we put a dog to work in a particular field, whether that be looking for vermin, drugs, bombs or our enemies (or even just making sure that the sheep go where they’re supposed to go or that their blind master gets home safely), we’re ‘conscripting’ them.

I think that we forget that if it wasn’t for some of these dogs that some of the soldiers wouldn’t make it home at all. Yes it wasn’t the dogs choice but if God didn’t want to have them to have the ability to help society then he wouldn’t have given them such intellagence.

Try looking at a dictionary for once, you mouth-breather. Prayer isn’t exclusively a religious practice. It can also simply mean an earnest wish for a positive outcome. Quit trying to turn everything into a fight for/against religion.

This picture makes me sad– too often, no one does think of the poor dogs who serve in the armed forces. They deserve our love and respect, and yes, our PRAYERS. In reference to the earlier argument, I really don’t understand how anyone can take offense to that? All religions have some version of prayer. As for the atheists…no one is out to get you, or offend you. Honestly, some of you are as bad as fundamentalist Christians sometimes, taking offense to everything and insisting that your way is the only right way. But that is just my personal opinion, and I’m sure it’s not ever atheist.

Oh, and having lived with dogs my whole life, I think the definitely deserve our prayers, because there is no doubt in my mind that they have a soul. Anyone who has loved a dog will probably agree with me.

That said– I will remember the puppies that work with our soldiers

wow just when i think that people cant get anymore callous…. someone pops up….as the mother of an american soldier i can tell you that its not like any other job… when is the last time while going to work that you were shot at or worried about driving over a mine or had to help pick up a fallen comrade at your feet… they deserve all the mush that they want…….as far as Im concerned they’ve earned it!

I think the offence that was taken was to the “praying” bit.

Given that, say, the Catholic church says that animals don’t have souls and don’t go to heaven, etc, etc, surely it’s ironically insulting that a prayer should be said for an animal that is made to risk its life (not that it’s given a choice) to save humans.. and then the humans have the hide to PRAY for the animal of which it denies a soul.

Yes, as an athiest and a human I do take offence at that.

I think anybody who has had the lives of family saved by a War Dog would beg to differ. Look up Sgt. Stubby and see what he did for his fellow soldiers. Do you really think he shouldn’t be remembered along side humans? Without him, how many would be dead? In fact, with out him, how many may have never lived in the first place?

You are right – dogs should be remembered ABOVE humans!

Don’t forget the dog doesn’t choose to be there and is performing a very dangerous task to save human lives simply because he/she has been trained to do so out of love for pleasing humans.

I have more respect for the dog than I could ever spare for someone who doesn’t appreciate this.

I respect and admire our fighters and veterans, but I have to say I am totally humbled by their animal companions who don’t choose or understand the reasons behind their jobs and tasks, but still go above and beyond, and often show more humanity than some humans I could name!

This picture brought tears to my eyes!

As a pagan athiest, I still pray; not to a god, but to the spirit of the whole world, and my prayers/meditations/spells are very firmly aimed at all the wonderful beings so generously serving!!!

(oh, and don’t forget the other purpose of today; Armistice day, celebrating the start of Peace after WW1!!!!)
