I thought I recognized this photo from the Oklahoma City Memorial, so I looked it up. This photo was taken by David Allen in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995. He published an essay called “An Image From Oklahoma City,” in the June 2007 issue of the Journal of American History in which the photo appeared (from a slightly different angle). Regardless, these heros deserve our thanks, whether they worked in rescue and recovery following the Oklahoma City bombing, 9/11 in New York or Washington, or some fire nobody gives a second thought about after it’s out of the newspapers the next day. They work hard and so do their animal partners. I’m very grateful.

Golden RETRIEVER! Golden retrievers and labrador retrievers are two separate breeds. A “golden lab” would be a mix of the two.

I don’t intend to be mean or anal, but I’m a vet tech and I can’t seem to help myself when it comes to correcting things like this.

I’ve trained a search dog, and it’s not exactly that they think they’ve been a bad dog, but to the dogs its a game. In order to keep the dog interested and excited in the game, they need to be rewarded every now and again. You don’t want to reward the dog for not finding anyone. So, yes, during a massive search that takes days, if the dogs do not find anyone, then we do take them aside and “hide” a subject and have the dog “find” them. I think we all work better when rewarded.

This pic brings tears to my eyes. Poor rescue worker, burdened down with having seen too much pain, can only lean on his partner–who, fortunately, is able and willing to help him carry his burdens.

Beautiful. There are teams of rescue dogs and their humans who come running to help when there are disasters. They are overworked, dirty and often in danger (the dogs and their humans have died from shifting rubble, etc) as they try to balance safety for themselves vs the time running out for anyone trapped and choosing to risk the danger in the hopes of finding just one more living soul to save. I have heard of one memorial, not sure if it was a local or national, but that picture would make a good statue for a memorial. Thank you rescue teams, hugs all round. also thanks for the posting the picture to remind everyone of these too often unsung heroic teams.

That’s a golden retriever. The queue is the long coat. Labs generally have short coats.

Golden labs are truly angels sent here to save us. One saved my life years ago. All dogs are wonderful but there is something special about the golden labs. Just look at the expression on that face in this picture.

I’ve read that when rescue dogs have a streak of *not* finding victims in wreckage, they don’t think,”Oh, good, all the humans got out in time again” Instead they think, “I didn’t find anyone…I’m a bad dog” and they get depressed. As a result, rescue teams have sites set up where they can hide “victims” in rubble, the dog finds them, everyone praises the dog lavishly, and the dogs are happy again. It’s a shame dogs can’t comprehend that (most of the time…) it’s a good thing to not find victims in rubble!
