Puppys should not take the stairs within the first months / year. That’s bad for their spine.

    • Kt says:

I guess that means people with steps aren’t allowed to get large breed puppies who are un-liftable after3 months??

    • BAReFOOt says:

Says who? Have you seen them fight? If that is not “bad” for their spine, then what is? Think in nature they care?
I say it TRAINS their spine! But hey: Humans have a thing for making others become unable to live in the real world, just like themselves. “Ooh noez, teh germs! Oo noez, the weatherz, oh noes, can’t walk barefoot. Oh noes, can’t eat non-predigested ‘food’.” Etc.

Well, you can destroy yourselves, but leave those poor animals alone! (And my children too!)

    • Kristy says:

This is very true. I have yorkies and its dangerous for small dogs to go up nd down stairs a lot. there are many things that can go wrong.

      • Omnomnom says:

I have a goggeh that went up and down stairs at a young age. She is in fantastic shape now and she’s a dachshund cross silky terrier. Quite small in size.

        • Omnomnom says:

Plz Ignore previous comment. Didn’t realize it was Corgy specific…
Btw, I thought i had typed Corgy wrong and went into the spelly thing and it suggested that I had meant to type Orgy….FAIL

  2. Marilyn says:

Gosh, I love a happy ending!

  3. bumi says:

cute dog, but how dare you to call this poor little thing “butterball”?! I mean, what the heck?!

  4. rga says:

didn’t laugh at this one because he’s only seven weeks old and seems scared. Pls just let your pup adjust to his new life en grow up a little before challenging hem like this. A ten week old pup would think this is fun.

    • cakeislie says:

He WAS scared but if you look at the end he just cruises through the last steps.

      • wombot says:

Probably cos he knows he hasn’t got a choice.

        • Caghs says:

Either that, or he overcame his fear :)

I agree, he’s probably a tad young … but overcoming this fear so young will build his confidence in himself and his owner, so long as he’s not hurt in the process :)

          • Caghs says:

Oh yeah, and why has he left his Mum so young? Unless there’s a whole litter of them in the house, and the Mum is somewhere around …

8 weeks, people! 8 weeks! (12 ideally, but 8 is minimum)

          • wombot says:

It’s rational fear though, which you don’t need to overcome. He could easily have tumbled down those steps. Can you imagine how those steps would look from his position?

          • Beccaasm6 says:

Now THAT’S talking sense! I agree with Caghs. Just as long as the puppy is supervised on the steps, he should be fine. Plus, the younger he is to be taught to overcome his fears. Or else he could end up like my old dog: Afraid of sounds, stairs, and people. The poor thing even ran away and he’s been gone for 1 year. I feel sorry for you if you don’t believe me, but it’s true. I do not wish to offend anyone, and I apologize if I did.

  5. nennepus says:

    Oh dear….
    SSSPPPLLLOOORRRTTT…

    • Q. says:

      Oooh, nenne! I halpz you.
      *Here comes the CCC
*Scoops up teh lurvly braynz, washes in cool sparkling water with hint of pomegranate
      *Packs carefully back inside head
      *tapestapestapes the head back together
*pulls on a brand-new CHRG/wdoi (of cute baby Corgi pups)
*leads nenne to a comfy couch in the splort recovery lounge
*yoinks a piece of sponj cake wiv passion fruit filling from LOLcats and pours a cuppa tea and a whiskey and soda, puts on tablol at nenne’s side
There, now. Do not looks at incredible cuteness of the baby Corgi coming down the stairs until you’ve regained a littlol strengf, k?

  6. thomas says:

That is the cutest thing ever.

  7. Ellen W. says:

    Hims too small fer stairs.

(an’ I luvs duh kitteh at the ends!)

  8. Breenlolz says:

goggie iz scairt … pur goggie.

  9. tmt86 says:

Baby corgis should especially not take the stairs at this age (in fact, they shouldn’t even leave their mommy until 8 weeks). It can really hurt them! I carried my corgi puppy up and down stairs until he was at least 12 weeks old.

    Also: CORGI!

  10. tartina says:

    butterball??? maybe squeakers instead…
I felt bad 4 the pup; and 7 weeks is a bit young to be away from the mom dog. But perhaps the mom was at the bottom of the stairs or maybe the pup was scaredt of the cat?

  11. D.R. says:

How I gonna do this? Oh jeemony. One… tew… ohnononononope. Whew. Okay… one more, and– down. Next time, I give dem the big watery eyez, and they carry mee! :)

  12. Phil says:

    CORGI!!!!!

  13. fidra says:

Iz CORGI goggie!! I lubs Corgi goggies….

  14. Belmel says:

I agree that puppy is way to young to be doing the stairs– please just pick him up and carry him.

  15. jularh says:

Aw, couldn’t you have saved the lil guy some trauma and carried him down the stairs? He’s just too cute for words, though :)

  16. Sadi says:

I’m sure the owner loves this little puppy, but I would not have made a puppy this young do those stairs.

  17. EB says:

    OMG People . . .

    Jeesh!!

    The puppy’s fine – stop crying . . don’t call 911 . .

  18. Aud says:

I also have a Corgi puppy! BUT– as puppies, Corgis carry too much weight in the front of their body to be allowed to go downstairs, and their vertebrae are not nearly developed enough. Allowing them or, in your case, forcing them to go downstairs before they are ready is a recipe for disaster, and can cause serious injury. And I have to agree, it looks like the pup is really stressed by the situation. I’m sure you love him and wouldn’t do this if you knew it was bad for him… just please keep some of what I (and others) wrote in mind. Safe, healthy Corgi pups for us all :)

  19. Redd says:

My goggies were a breeding pair before I got them (the first thing I did was get them fixed). The puppy squeaks had my little boy on edge, and my little girl running around the living room looking for the distressed pup.

Yeah, I don’t think there’s anything in this world cuter than a corgi puppy.

  20. mike yeralldead flood says:

That vid was so cute I was cooing like a liitle girl. I then had to scoop my eyes out with a spoon cause I never wanted to see anthor thing ever again. The zenith of cuteness.

  21. I_Love_Goggies says:

    Hessa cutie pye!

    Yes he iz!

    Yes he iz!

    *SPLORT*

  22. BING says:

awwwww, SO adorable!!!!!!!!!!!! Just like my mini-doxie when he was that lil. Whined and whined about everything!!!! Still does =p
    ps LOVE the name

  23. Psilence says:

Mommy, dees stairs are too big and scaree :(

  24. aikisenshi says:

Aw. When my dog was only a little bit older than this pup, the hubby and I were sitting in the living room watching TV when we suddenly heard a pitiful *whine*, *whine*, *tiny howl*, coming from up the stairs.
We went over and looked up, and there was our puppy, who had never climbed a single stair before, up at the very top of the staircase, looking down at us, scared and shaking.
There was lots of licks when we rescued him and took him back downstairs.

  25. Michelle says:

awwww. maybe you should wait til he’s ready to go down the stairs. poor little guy was scared. cute as heck though!

  26. Xaqtly says:

It’s not clear from the video, but I hope that puppy was not taken from its mother before it was eight weeks old. Separating them earlier than that is not only horribly irresponsible, it can actually cause unwanted behavior in your dog.

Those eight weeks with the mother are absolutely crucial for the puppy to learn critically important behavior; things like not to bite people because it hurts them, you know, little things like that. A lot of unwanted behavioral issues like that are specifically caused by removing the puppies from the mother too soon.

  27. ittap says:

what kind of goggie is this??
    so cute.

  28. Sarah says:

I’ve never commented on these pictures before, but this one drove me to it. I have to agree with the comments about this puppy being too small to go down stairs. It’s obvious that he can’t control his forward momentum properly – do you really want him to tumble down the stairs and break his neck? Because that’s what happens to young animals in this situation – I know of a baby rabbit who died in this scenario. Would you force a six month old baby to use your stairs?

  29. Roo says:

Yep, seven weeks is too young to be away from the litter. They learn a lot about social interaction and bit inhibition in later weeks, and you’re doing the pup a disservice by taking them away before eight weeks.

And stairs put to much stress on wee pups at that age, especially ones with long-backed, short-legged builds (Corgis, Doxies, etc.). Carrying them downstairs as pups will help prevent joint/spine issues.

Lastly, when exposing pups to stairs, start by putting them on the last stair or two and letting them come down that way. It’s much less scary for them, and they learn with less stress. Puppies have a really crucial fear imprint period between eight and ten weeks, and one bad experience on the stairs can leave you with a dog who has stair issues for life.

But dear God, that is one cute puppy.

  30. Yourmum says:

errrr how is this funny exactly?

  31. wombot says:

Can’t you hear him whimpering? You should have more empathy for your pets.

  32. Zoid says:

OK, so, I agree that it’s not funny, but can everyone stop saying the exact same thing? We get it, the baby is too young to be away from it’s mother, and it’s dangerous to let it go down stairs this early.

    • Katharine says:

Thank you! Yes, thank you all for voicing your concerns, but you know nothing about this family or the background of this pup from this video (maybe there’s a reason why they have him at seven weeks? Maybe there is a mother there? You can’t judge from this 2 minute clip!) Yes, he’s too young to be going down the stairs, I agree, but that’s all that needs to be said.

About the whimpering…at this age it would have been acceptable to sooth his fears and carry him down the stairs. But you really shouldn’t indulge your dogs every whimper and whine. You wouldn’t do that with your kids. My dog whines when he knows the tortoise is getting fed outside. Of course I don’t let him out, because he just wants the tortoise’s nummy lettuce.

I get the feeling that a lot of people on this site indulge their pets a little too much, which is just as harmful as neglecting them. =/

  33. Guest says:

Horrible and Funny at the same time.

  34. Pam says:

I’m a veterinarian and as I watched this video I just wanted to jump in and tell them to stop. The dog is whining a lot. Yes, you’re not supposed to soothe them after every whimper and wine, but clearly this puppy was not comfortable going down the stairs. As others have said they are very forward-heavy and their spines are not developed. Despite that fact, the owners should’ve been aware just be hearing their puppy that they shouldn’t be doing that.

  35. Cassandra says:

    Awwn!
Could someone tell me what kind of puppy that is?!

    • ittap says:

for real! i already asked and no one answered!!

      • Kiyara says:

Thats because it was said probably seventeen times in various other comments.

It’s a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. They are always adorable, and they are very distinctive, and I would recommend a quick read through an illustrated guide to dog breeds.

  36. Kat says:

I pitty the dog who gets named after a popular brand of poultry.

  37. Lauren says:

I’ve seen this video before… there are maybe 4-5 stairs, and then a landing, which is where the owner is… the pup is fine… in fact, there is a second video showing the pup going up the stairs with some help. ;)

The owner has also posted videos of Butterball since then, and he is fully grown up, healthy and happy. :)

  38. savannah says:

poor puppeh… he’ll conquer those stairs one day. dog: “i shall have my revenge.mwahahahaha!!!!!!!”

  39. Joel says:

Aww gud job puppeh, show dose stairs whose boss!

  40. sm says:

Why does she have a 7 week old puppy? Puppies should not be taken from their mothers until at the very least 8 week. :(
