For those of you going “lolwut?”

The term “the cake is a lie” comes from the video game “Portal” By Valve. During the game you are instructed to solve puzzles as an increasingly homicidal computer tries to lure you to your doom. The primary method of leading you along is the promise of cake. Which even after the computer’s betrayal (and your escape, followed with your attempt at revenge) still tries to contain you with promises of it.

As a result, throughout the internet the term “The cake is a lie” has come to exist.

And for those of you who are not videogame fans, I still recommend playing it for it’s puzzles and creative use of physics to solve them (If you enjoy Portal, I recommend “Braid” as well, it does to time what Portal did to space)
