  3. rosieluv says:

Laddie is from Mars, Lassie is from Venus.

  4. woodchuck says:

I always suspected that Lassie had an evil twin.

  5. Furthea says:

    AUGH!!!!!

    Those aren’t COLLIES!

Lassie was a Collie. Those are Shetland Sheepdogs, better known as Shelties. And any relation they might have with Collies is centuries old.

Sorry….it’s a Pet Peeve I inherited from my mother.

I wouldn’t have thought they were collies either, until I read “Lad, a Dog” and read the scene where Lad’s owner was upset about the new, lighter type with longer noses and lighter bones, versus Lad’s robust type…

It’s quite likely that they were talking about new judge preferences within the collie line, which aren’t often even perceptible to those ‘outside the know.’ For example, in the past few years judges have been favoring bigger shelties ,which my breeder dislikes–by bigger, they mean closer to the upper end of 16′ at shoulder instead of 13′…a total height gap of 3′ inches, which is probably barely noticeable to people who aren’t sheltie lovers.

        • Furthea says:

lol. Both our previous shelties grew entirely out of the standard. XD So they both were shown in Agility and obediance.

What most people don’t catch is that shelties and collies actually have quite different faces in structure, if not always in color.

Collies from nose tip to mid-skull or so are very straight, whereas Shelties have a notable curve where the muzzle becomes face and skull.

          Even the oversized ones.

I have to agree on your opinion of the judges. I don’t really watch many of the breed shows these days but when I catch a bit of one I really have to stop and think “WTF,” on some of their choices.

Especially on one’s like the Labradors and German shepherds. If a dog can’t do the work they were originally designed for then they don’t fit the real standard for the breed.

          sorry

Actually, collies were introduced into the sheltie line as recently as the 1930′s. But it’s true that they’re shelties. I have a sheltie and everyone calls him “lassie”…o.O

  6. lowly grunt says:

Lassie’s other, less-well-known sister, Lisa, had a strange sense of humor. <_< (I loled)
