Does this mean that the typo, “Master’s”, with the incorrectly placed apostrophe, was deliberately placed, or is this caption a fail? I am assuming that the reader is supposed to interpret that the dog is hungry.

    • mouse says:

actually, “master’s” is not a typo, it’s short for “master’s degree”… anyone who did a master’s should know that ;)

Oh, no! I did not notice that! My Business Communications professor has been witching all week about how people don’t use punctuation correctly anymore, so I was trying to sound “so smart”. Damnit.

    Fascinating.

I did some web searches and found the apostrophe both used and not used by various universities describing such degrees.

I suspect, if this issue really makes it to a grammar/spelling nazi level, that it is more appropriate to forego the apostrophe.

The degree doesn’t belong to the “master”, the degree confers the title of “Master”. Therefore the appropriate usage in the caption (and in conversation) might even be “You can get your Master in Eng lit…”.

However, if we are to get into spelling and grammar disputes, methinks doing so on a LOL site to be the ultimate in irony.
