Though i don't support the "war" or battle or whatever we wanna call it. I do support the troops busting their butts fighting for what they believe in. and hope they return home safe and sound.
And if they do get injured.. I hope there are friendly dogs such as this wonderful dog to be there by their side to help them every step of the way.

Foxfier, I think you just did exactly what ccc was writing about. If I may attempt to summarise that post, ccc says that there is a difference between supporting the soldiers, and supporting what they are doing at any given time. It seems that few people attempt to make a distinction between the two.

I think all three of us would agree that supporting both the idea of a soldier (one who dies to protect our freedoms), and the reality of a soldier (a human being that may not live to see sunset), are good things. I think everyone is saying exactly the same thing, but no one is saying it clearly enough to be understood. Then, of course, there are posts like that by "baddogmonkeyboy" (the one that originally motivated me to monitor this thread) that are saying exactly the opposite, and I would guess that all three of us are on the other side of the argument from that poster.

We're all agreeing, just in our different ways.

the problem i have with conversations like this is that anybody who is not immediately reverent and kowtows to those serving our nation is combated with such sophisms as "they protect your right to say that, etc." people allow emotions to cloud their reason and they start participating in a jingoistic ritual that is both frightening and unsettling to watch. that's not the correct response in this case, nor is it ever really.

first off, i have friends in the armed forces and i have family who have served, so i'm not just some punk kid who doesn't appreciate the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. i have personal ties to these people. the guy who criticized the soldier was in the wrong because soldiers only kill when ordered. they have rules of engagement (america's are much more cautious than many other countries), they have mission statements that guide their actions, and they have to follow the Uniform Code of Military Justice at all times. They swear an oath to uphold the constitution, and what that means is that they have to do what they are told to do by the Commander in Chief, whom we vote into office. subservience of the military to the highest-ranking civilian authority is paramount to preventing the military from ever coalescing as an isolated interest group and performing a political coup. that is the heart of the oath they swear to uphold. they don't kill because they like to. but (and this is the important part) nor do they kill because it's necessary to protect our freedom. not every armed conflict our soldiers have participated in is actually conducive to protecting our freedom, so you can't go around shouting this tired rhetoric. but it is not a soldier's fault if he is ordered to participate in an armed conflict which does not actually protect U.S. civilians. he cannot be held responsible for killing to protect himself and his fellow servicemen because it was not his choice to be used in that fashion. soldiers only ever kill because they are told to. but only -if- they are told to. you could drop 100,000 of america's finest into any country in the world, and not a single gun would be fired if they were ordered not to. in short, you cannot blame a soldier for being forced to kill to protect himself and his servicemen, but the proper counter-argument is that he is an unwilling participant and cannot be blamed for any tragedies he is involved in. just screaming "but they protect our freedom!" is not good enough, nor is it always true. but in cases when it isn't, it is not their fault that they were misused.

As someone said earlier, do not blame the soldiers, blame the people who put them there. Because, more often than not, war is not about freedom or upholding an ideal, but about money, greed and power. And it is men like the one above who put themselves on the line to try and fix the mistakes that the suited idiots made with their hotheaded blundering. And the sad truth of it is, the ones who put them there will never know their suffering, and the physical and mental anguish that they go through, because they never go into the action themselves. The selfish bastards sit back and watch as noble men and women give their lives for someone else's vendetta. If it wasn't for our soldiers, we would suffer at the hands of fools. So do not blame the soldiers, they're just looking out for you... somebody has to.

This picture reminded me of a story they told about my 86 year old father. He was a highly decorated pilot who served in the Marine Corp in the South Pacific during WWII. He adopted a stray dog at his base and used to sneak him on his plane went he would fly his missions. He used to volunteer to fly ammunition and explosives to different islands that the Marines were fighting to take back from the Japanese. Many times he was flying in under fire. His dog would sit with him and his co-pilot keeping them calm. They would pick up wounded soldiers--most of whom were horribly burned--and fly them back. His dog friend would wander up and down the plane comforting those who were in terrible pain. My father said that the Distinguished Flying Cross and clusters that he received also belonged to the dog. I never served in the military but my father is the bravest man I have ever known. I just wish I could have given his dog a big hug too!

There are scant few internet based debates I involve myself with. Never have I posted on this board, so to the regular contributors I ask that you please forgive my intrusion. The anonymity of internet forums serves to enhance inherent behaviours (whether constructive or counterproductive) that would otherwise be repressed had we not the opportunity to comment without fear of retribution. Caveat aside, here is my point (FINALLY!) in the plainest english I am able to muster: Armed service members are no different from civilians. They are civilians. They are our community. They just wear a uniform, and have a job to do which can only be performed with extensive training. Like many of us who chose a career, or even those of us who chose something productive to do "for right now" over being a blight or burden on society; the armed services was their choice instead of say, corporate law or McDonald's. There is a skill set learned, and they get paid to execute it. Theirs just happens to be continuous on the job training. The subject of photograph (someone who is being comforted by a furry "doctor" - one who happens to look great in red btw ;-) - that just happens to be a service member) should not be misconstrued. Universally, we need comfort and care. Four-legged friends are very effective at providing this without judgment, and without prejudice. This man was hurt badly doing nothing more than his job, and should not be condemned for his choices, as those choices do not in any way detriment society in the least. The policymakers - direct your disdain towards them. Service members follow the orders given to them by the ones who ultimately wage the wars (not the ones who are fighting it) as it is their job to do so. I do not support war, nor will I. But my condemnation is reserved for the suits, not the uniforms. To the gentleman in the photograph, I pray your recovery (physically, mentally and spiritually) is swift and whole. Oh, btw - I'm jealous. I wanna pet the goggie!
