  9. maiasaura says:

I’ve rescued every single dog I’ve ever had, and written about them all on my Facebook page. I can now say I’ve talked some of my friends into also going the rescue route. This is a very good caption.

  10. vampfiend687 says:

if only i had a big house with lots of room for doggies and kitties to run and play and be doggies and kitties, i would adopt every single one that i can.

  13. keshet says:

Of my 3 goggies, 2 were adopted from the Humane Society and the 3rd followed the other 2 home from a walk one day.

Cutie! I can find room for 1 more!

  14. Faceless says:

I recently learned that PETA shelters have a 93% kill rate as opposed to ASPCA shelters which have an 83% adopt rate.

  15. Doktor J says:

There’s no reason this should not be rated 5 :(

Everyone should adopt… and anything that suggests/encourages/promotes/etc adoption should itself be promoted!

  16. ismene says:

Both of my dogs were adopted from ASPCA shelters, and my cats have been rescued from the street or shelters. There is NO reason to not adopt. Buying a purebred is a waste of money when there are prefectly good, sweet animals in shelters all over the country.

And with the economy the way it is, the shelters are now bursting because people can’t afford to keep their pets. “Opt to adopt” is perfect and wonderful. Well done.

  17. Feedledeedoo says:

Both my cat and my dog are adopted from shelters, but I don’t understand why some people try to make others feel bad for buying their pets in a store. If someone didn’t buy a puppy of a kitten from a store, where do you think it would end up? Basically people who buy are saving some poor puppy from eventually having to live that sort of nightmare.

    • warrior rabbit says:

I understand what you’re saying, but the logic is flawed. You might think consumers are saving the animal from winding up at the pound, but the purchase only encourages more breeding of animals that may or may not end up at the pound. It’s like a Hydra in that regard.

The reason for the anti-pet store sentiment is twofold: First and foremost, the places that have historically supplied pet stores with pets were unregulated, uninspected hellholes that produced severely ill animals and kept them in close confinement, etc. I believe it’s better now than it was years ago, but the problem still exists.

Second is the fact that buying pet store animals just perpetuates the cycle. The store and mill make a profit and churn out more to replace the stock that was just sold. If people did not buy animals from a pet store, the pet stores would stop contracting out with people who are breeding animals, and then more animals who are in shelters, etc. could be adopted instead. It’s basic supply and demand. Eliminate the demand and the supply will dry up. This has also changed a lot in the last 20 or so years, and I commend the pet stores that now feature shelter animals instead. In my town, Petco features adoptable kitties who are Rescue House charges (generally shelter saves). Yay!

    • lufflaff says:

      allow me to educate you.
First, I don’t think anyone really wants to make people feel bad (at least I don’t). I think want people want to do is educate others! So many people don’t really know the truth, and think it’s just fine to buy from a pet store.
People who buy animals from stores are supporting puppy mills. The animals that live on these mills live in atrocious conditions. These animals are bred. Buying from a pet store does not save anyone. 4-6 MILLION animals a year are euthanized because there aren’t enough homes. The best way to stop backyard breeding like this is to not shop there, and rescue your animals from a shelter.
*this is obviously different if the pet store is adopting out from shelters, like PetSmarts do.
also, all shelters are not nightmares. and that’s not where those pet store animals end up.

      • nell says:

I have a question, and I’m asking it honestly because I don’t know the answer. I’m not meaning this to be argumentative. What does happen to the animals that don’t sell at pet stores? (I’ve always adopted so I’ve never bought one from a pet store) I would hate to think they were put to sleep or something because they weren’t bought. The poor animals can’t help that they are pet store animals. Are they given to shelters?

For the record, I’m against the puppy mills and anything that is cruel to an animial. I’ve just never thought about what happens to the animals in the pet stores.

    • Dina says:

It should be noted that buying a dog from a registered breeder rather than a pet store/backyard breeder is a bit of a grey area option – some people find it unconscionable considering the number of dogs in shelters, but at least dogs from registered breeders are bred for their health and love of the breed rather than to make money.

      • lufflaff says:

eehhh…it’s less of a grey area for me, personally. Anyone can become a registered breeder. Many people still do it for the money. I think that any animal that is going to be bred needs to have an exceptional background, and very desirable traits, and the people doing the breeding really need to know what they’re doing.
that said, if you insist on buying a dog, and for some reason don’t want to go through a breed rescue, at least go to a breeder who does seem to care.

    • CB says:

Because “pets in a store” come from “puppy mills”.

If stupid people stopped buying puppies or kittens from a store, the stores would eventually stop selling them.

The stores don’t carry them because they give a damn about the animal, the stores carry them because they can make money off of them. If they stop making money, they stop carrying the merchandise.

Buying a puppy from a store only guarantees that thousands more dogs and puppies will continue living that sort of nightmare.

  18. Aayin says:

I haven’t procured any of my animals any other way.

  19. iris says:

my princess pretty paws, who is sleeping on the couch right now, in comfort thank you very much, looks a great deal like this dog. she was a pound pup. *sigh* i’ve been blessed by her, and i wish all dogs, everone in a pound could have good loving homes too could

  20. Hayley says:

We only have one shelter around here now, and althought its common to give a donation when you adopt an animal ours expect very steep amounts of money unfortunately.. when we decided to get a second cat they wanted £70 (around $140) in donation(not a pedigree btw, just a moggy), we were going to do it anyway till we discovered only round the corner from us a cat wasnt being fed or looked after and talked the owner into giving him to us instead. Still rescuing an animal just from somewhere else and hes now very happy and healthy and that £70 the shelter wanted went towards the vet bills to help him on his way to recovery :)

    • Shelter Worker says:

I just have to ask, what exactly did the cost cover? I work at an animal shelter in my area, and we charge $150 for cats (I am in Canada), but it covers the cost of the spay/neuter, needles, deworming and FeLV testing. Not to mention each cats individual veterinary needs, which range from nothing at all, to fecal testing and subsequent treating of the animal, URI treatment, dental work, necessary grooming, testing and treating for many different things. Even if the vet bill is nothing for us, we are still not even covering our base expenses on each cat we adopt out. No one is ever “buying” an animal from our shelter, they are simply covering a part of the costs for those services.

    • spock74 says:

Here’s the thing, though. People think all animal shelters are funded by the state/county/ASPCA/whatever. That is not true. The shelter I volunteer at is funded entirely by private donations, and whatever adoption fees we collect. When an animal is in a shelter it has to be fed, sheltered, watered and all those other things that cost money. We don’t get electricity, or heat, or water for free. Donations don’t always cover the amount of food and litter we need, so sometimes we have to buy that, too. Most shelter animals have been immunized, which also costs money. The adoption fee does not usually even begin to cover the costs of keeping that animal. If an animal lives with us for 6 months before he/she is adopted, they have certainly consumed more resources than the $125 adoption fee covers. Keep that in mind the next time you visit a shelter.

    • lolwannabeee says:

I had the same problem when i tried to adopt a kitteh from Assisi, they were looikng for a £50 donation, at the time i just didnt have it and had to leave the wee kitteh behind *sigh* she was a lovely wee thing too, had bowel problems and was to be on a speacial diet for life, i found out a few weeks after that she was re homed though, so a happy ending was had for her atleast!

  21. Dana says:

both my kitties and my huge horse of a dog are rescues – and so much smarter than those “pure breds”. yes yes OPT TO ADOPT

  22. Kashmir says:

Gilbert was dumped by an owner who decided to let him fend for himself. Rupert was found wandering in the downtown area. Both my boys are shelter dogs and I wouldn’t take anything for them. Shelter dogs are the best!

  23. IzNawtKool says:

    Kin ai getz an AMENZ???

AMENZ!!! Adowpt is da best. Ai adowpt all minez animalies cept four da goggie, wuz raized by my feeancee frum birf.

  24. barboid says:

there be lotsa horror stories of dogs/cats being ‘bred’. I would love to adopt another pet, but we live in a mobile home park and the owners will only allow ONE pet. Even though plenty of neighbors have ‘invisible’ pets, I cannot adopt, because around here, you have to prove to not only be capable, but have the OK of the ‘landlord(s)’ where you live. Owning the house, but not the land underneath is a double-edged sword. *sigh*

  25. Nana says:

This pic & capshun shud be on the door of every shelter in the world. And every pet store. And vet office. An convenience store. An Macy’s an yr dry cleaners an de library and all publik restrumes an StarBlicks an the SuperSafWay an every other place a hooman might go! Ifinkso.

  26. IndysMom says:

I volunteer at a service dog training organization. They train rescue dogs that have come from shelters. This is such an inspirational message and image. I plan to share it with the others I volunteer with.

  27. Raynefox says:

Thank you all for your wonderful comments! I took this photo at the animal shelter I work at. Please consider adopting all of your pets at a local shelter, give them donations or even volunteer. We have all been hit hard in this economy, but it shouldn’t be the animals that suffer. Thanks again!

  28. PeachyKat says:

Proud mommy to one former stray dog (a neutered Rottie\Chow-Chow biotch), a former stray American shorthair cat (male), and also a proud no-kill shelter volunteer.

    • raynefox says:

We unfortunately live in a place where no-kill is not an option. We simply do not have the funding, space, and community activism to find homes for all of our adoptable animals. We have space for about 75 cats and kittens, and during the spring can receive as many as 50 cats and kittens in one day. We have contacts with rescues, other shelters, even so-called “no kill” shelters, but in our state these places are often as over-run as we are. The term “no kill” is a bit outdated, as there really is no such thing. We prefer “limited admission” as most “no kill” shelters have the right to refuse an animal when it is brought to them. We don’t share that luxury, and are called “open admission” as opposed to “kill” shelter. I have a dream that one day, ALL shelters will not have to euthanize animals because of space reasons. Please, spay and neuter your pets!!

However, all shelters adore and LOVE their volunteers, so keep up the good work! Encourage others in your community to do the same, and everyone, PLEASE support your local animal shelter! Most of us are privately funded or rely on donations to keep animals fed and healthy-giving money from our own pockets to help the animals.

  29. Hedgehog says:

*squee!* Except for coloration, this looks almost identical to my sweet pup, who is a whippet/pitbull mix we rescued… judging from the lovely folded ears and the dainty arched toes, this one might be a similar muttling!

  30. chemchopity says:

both of my puppehs are purebred puppehs and they both were adopted from shelters. one from the humane society and the other from the county pound. if i had the money and the room i would adopt many more.

  32. Tessasmom says:

My Tessa was found wandering on the side of the highway, animal control picked her up, fostered her out, and I was lucky enough to have my adoption application approved. She is my love, and my life, the most beautiful, smart, funny and loving furbaby on the planet, and I can’t imagine life without her.
