I hate to disagree with you about this doggie, but this story actually happened here in Charlotte, NC. “She is pregnant; He had just saved her from a fire in her house ,rescuing her by carrying her out of the house into thefront yard,while he continued to fight the fire. When he finally got done putting the fire out, he sat down to catch his breath and rest.A photographer from the Charlotte , North Carolina newspaper, noticed her in the distance looking at the fireman.He saw her walking straight toward the fireman and wondering what she was going to do.As he raised his camera, She came up to the tired man who had saved her life and the lives of her babies and kissed him just as the photographer snapped this photograph.And people say animals are dumb. ” (story taken from Metro k-9)

The base picture, if anything, looks better to me. The simple fact is, it’s a picture of a dog licking a man. A man who happens to be in firefighting gear. We, as humans read into that what we will. If anything, the LOL version is closer to the truth as told by that firefighter than the version supposedly propagated elsewhere. No saving, just a dog licking (interpreted as a sign of appreciation) a person who the end viewer is conditioned to respect for their dangerous and lifesaving work. Soot or no soot, the IHAH version is still the truth from an artistic perspective.

Of course, we could also go with “BBQ hoomin: undercookd”

Here is a link to the story on Snopes. Technically the dog rescued herself because she was already out in the yard when the firefighters entered, but afterward she did befriend the firefighter, just in time for the photographer to snap the picture.
